View of Mt Everest from the Space Shuttle. The instrument is located on the Col between the South Face and the Kangshung Face.
The instrument was started at Everest Base camp on the 1st of May 2002 at 16:05 LT. On May 17th it was placed on the South Col of Everest (7861.986 m, 27.92N, 86.93E near Camp IV) by Geoffrey Stanford, Pasang Dawa and Gurmin Dorje. Measurements will be made every 5 minutes and the plan is to pick up the instrument in Spring 2003 and replace it with another one.

This trip was overshadowed by Peter's death on the 30th April. Peter
slipped 200 meters into a crevasse while descending down from Camp
III to Camp II. We were due to meet up with him that same morning.
Peter was an enthusiastic fan of the project. He came to visit us
several times at Imperial and the team was always excited when he
came. Peter took the instrument to Base Camp for us and we are all indebted
to him.
Memorial built to Peter near Lobuche.
